One way you can paint you cushions (supposed to work with chalk paint but I've only tried it with latex paint) is to get Fabric Medium - Martha Stewart is one brand but usually you can find it at big box craft or fabric stores. Fabric medium is what keeps the fabric from stiffening after painting. Clean the cushions.
Also, how do you chalk paint a cushion? Step two- water down your chalk paint so its a little less thick (but not too runny). Use your paint brush and evenly brush it on for a thin first coat. Step three- let your first coat dry. If needed, sand down any rough edges.

Pick a non-shedding, low pile fabric or upholstery to paint. Prep by cleaning surfaces and tape off any areas you do not wish to paint. Use a spray bottle to wet fabric until damp but not dripping wet. Pour roughly 20% water directly into your paint and mix and apply thin coats.

You can use fabric dye, chalk paint, or latex paint mixed with fabric medium. I decided against fabric dye since this is outdoor furniture. I also decided against chalk paint. Since I'm painting an entire couch, there is a lot of area to cover and chalk paint isn't always the most cost effective.

Tape the legs and any parts you want to protect from the paint. Spray water on your fabric chair or sofa until the fabric is damp. This will help the first coat of paint to soak into the fabric. The fabric medium is a liquid that mixes easily with the paint and thins it out a bit. It did not dilute the color of the paint as far as we could tell. Wash and dry your fabric prior to painting if possible, then paint away. Most fabrics can be heat set using an iron on medium or high heat for 3-5 minutes.Does fabric paint wash off?
Can I wash the fabrics that I paint? Yes, as long as you used fabric paint and the paint is completely dry. You might want to turn the garment inside out, and dry it on a clothing line (as opposed inside a clothes dryer).What paints can I use on fabric?
